Tomato chutney or thokku is a popular recipe of South Indian cuisine. Once the tomato season is on with ripe tomatoes abundant and cheap at market, my mom prepares this delicious thakkali thokku at home. It is one of the delicious side dish with any Indian dishes like roti, chapati, idli, dosa, upma and even for steamed rice. The juicy ripe tomatoes are cooked along with flavorful spices to thick masala. In this video recipe, I will show you how to make heavenly delicious tomato thokku. Enjoy!

Ingredients
Tomato - 4 to 5
Onion - 2
Oil - 2 tbsp
Mustard - 1/4 tsp
Cumin - 1/2 tsp
Split urad dal - 1/2 tsp
Chana dal - 1 tsp
Garlic - 4
Ginger paste - 1/2 tsp
Turmeric pwd - 1/4 tsp
Red chilli pwd - 1 tsp
Coriander pwd - 1 & 1/2 tsp
Cumin pwd - 1/2 tsp
Garam masala pwd - 1/2 tsp
Saunf pwd - 1/2 tsp
Ghee - 1 tsp
Sugar (optional ) - 1/2 tsp
Curry leaves
Coriander leaves
Salt to taste
Instructions
1.
Wash and slice onion and tomato
2.
Heat oil in frypan.
3.
Add mustard, cumin, split urad dal and wait to splutter.
4.
Add chana dal, curry leaves and saute.
5.
Add grated garlic and saute for a minute.
6.
Add finely sliced onion, salt and toss until onions are transculent.
7.
Add mashed tomato, ginger paste and cook until oil separates.
8.
Add turmeric pwd, red chilli pwd, coriander pwd, cumin pwd, hing and saute.
9.
Cover & cook for few minutes.

Stir once in a while (without adding water), until the masala thickens.
11.
Add saunf pwd, sugar 1/2 tsp (optional) and a tsp of ghee.
12.
Mix well and turn off flame.
13.
Garnish with fresh coriander leaves.

Flavorful delicious Thakkali thokku is ready.

Transfer to serving bowl.
