Keerai Vadai | Spinach Vadai
Hello friends, Today’s recipe is special South Indian tea-time snack, Keerai Vadai ( Spinach Vadai). It is prepared with greens and lentils. This healthy and tasty snack can be prepared very easily. We can use any kind of greens, for this recipe. I recommend spinach ( pasalai keerai), arai keerai, ponnanganni keerai, murungai keerai ( drumstick leaves), amaranth ( thandu keerai), etc. This excellent and flavorful vadai tastes awesome with a combo of coconut chutney and sambar. I love this vadai very much and I am sure you all will like it too..:) Also this spinach vada is great for kids, who doesn’t like spinach. Here is the easy recipe, how to make delicious Keerai Vadai in the simplest way..:)
Ingredients
Chana dal / Bengal gram / kadalai paruppu - 1 ½ cup
Toor dal - ¼ cup
Any spinach / Keerai / greens - 2 cups
Hing - a generous pinch
Saunf - ¼ tsp
Red chilly - 2
Garlic - 1
Onions sliced - 1 cup
Oil to deep fry
Salt to taste
Instructions
1.
Wash and chop keerai to fine pieces.
2.
Wash and soak chana dal and toor dal for 1 hour in water.
3.
Drain the water completely.
4.
Take out a handful of soaked dal and keep it aside for adding to the grinded batter. (this gives a crispy texture to the vadai. )
5.
Add the soaked dal to the blender, add hing, saunf, salt, red chilly, garlic and grind it to coarse batter.
6.
Transfer the batter to the bowl.
7.
Add the reserved soaked dal to the batter ( step 4)
8.
Add finely sliced onions.
9.
Add finely chopped keerai.
10.
Mix well.
11.
Heat oil in a fry pan.
12.
Take a small ball of the mixture.
13.
Slightly flatten in the palm of your hand and then drop gently in the hot oil.
14.
Fry the vadas in batches. ( can fry 4 or 5 as per the pan size without crowding the oil)
15.
Reduce the flame to medium low heat after 2 mins.
16.
Deep fry on both sides to crisp, golden brown color.
17.
Drain the vadas in paper tissue.
18.
Crispy, crunchy Keerai Vadai is ready..!
